Sixteen years after choosing Wilson to co-star in the Academy Award-nominated film, Cast Away, Tom Hanks continues to be overlooked for the Celebrity All-Star Game. Critically acclaimed, Cast Away endeared the lovable volleyball to millions in the year 2000. But while the accolades poured in for Wilson, including a Critic’s Choice Award for Best Inanimate Object, the rival sport ball, Spalding, could do nothing but sulk.
But the star basketball is having the last laugh. Sure Hanks’s latest release, Bridge of Spies, is in contention for a number of Academy Awards, but on Friday night, he’ll be watching Kevin Hart’s dream team from home.
An anonymous source at Twentieth Century Fox said, “Rumor has it that Spalding made the Space Jam set a living hell. He was late to set, unreliable under pressure, and smelled like a god-damned titty bar. He just wasn’t Oscar material.”
Spalding could not be reached for comment.
